What is a traffic source?
A traffic source is, as the name suggest, one of your sources of traffic. Typical examples of traffic sources are your affiliate sites, or an email marketing account.
By adding your traffic sources to Routy you will be able to see
- Page views (if it is a website)
- Clicks on your traffic source
- Conversions coming from your traffic source
If your traffic source is a website you will also be able to see which pages are driving conversions.
How do you set up a traffic source in Routy?
Adding and connecting your website/traffic source to Routy is extremely straightforward. Simply click on the Traffic Sources button on the left sidebar and click Add in the top right hand corner.
You will then be prompted to name your traffic source, select the source type and if you select the Website source type, input your website URL.
If you choose to add a Website source type you will need to input a tracking script into your website. It is highly important that you input this in the head section of your website, otherwise tracking will not work. You can find the tracking script by clicking on the relevant traffic source in the Traffic Sources section.
Note: If you are using Google Tag Manager, we recommend setting the tag to fire on all pages.
We recommend setting your Routy pixel script to be one of the first scripts to load on your page. This is to ensure that you will not lose the page view ID parameter (more on that here). If the script does not load before the user clicks, you will not know what page the click and conversion came from.
After you’ve added the tracking script to your site you can also check that it’s working using our heartbeat function. Please not that the pixel only tracks relevant pages. By default, it does not track pages where it does not find any Routy links or affiliate links containing /goto/ or /visit/.
We can configure your traffic source from our end to track affiliate links in your own format (e.g. /go/ or /out/).
Quick Tip: You might need to open the website in a new tab to get a confirmation that the heart beat is working
Changing the settings of your traffic source
You can change the settings of your traffic source in the settings tab, as shown in the screenshot above. If you would like to change the dynamic variable prefix (DPXXXXXX) you can do so via the 'Dynamic Param Prefix' textbox.
